In our fast-paced world, maintaining a sense of wellbeing can often feel like an elusive goal. Yet, there are simple, evidence-based actions we can take to enhance our overall wellbeing. Here are the Five Ways to Wellbeing, inspired by research from the New Economics Foundation (using evidence gathered from a 'wellbeing through the lifespan' project, commissioned by the UK government in 2008). These principles are designed to help us lead happier, healthier lives:
1. Connect
Human connections are the cornerstone of wellbeing. Building and nurturing relationships with family, friends, and colleagues can profoundly impact our emotional health. Whether it's sharing a meal, having a heartfelt conversation, or joining a community group, connecting with others fosters a sense of belonging and support.
Here are some ways you could make a connection today:
• If you feel comfortable, you could try speaking to someone new
• Ask how someone’s weekend was, and really listen when they tell you
• Put five minutes aside to find out how a colleague is doing
• Give a colleague a lift to work or share the journey home with them
2. Be Active
Physical activity is not just about fitness—it's a powerful mood booster. Whether you enjoy walking, dancing, swimming, or yoga, finding an activity you love can make it easier to incorporate movement into your daily routine. Exercise releases endorphins, which help reduce stress and improve our overall mood.
Here are a few ideas for how you can get active:
• Take the stairs rather than the lift
• Go for a walk at lunchtime
• Walk into work – maybe you could go with a colleague
• Get off the bus a stop earlier than usual and walk the final part of your journey to work
• Organise a work sporting activity
• Have a kick-about in a local park
• Do some stretches before you leave for work in the morning
• If you're in the office, walk over to someone’s desk instead of calling or emailing
3. Take Notice
Being present and fully engaged in the moment enriches our daily experiences. Practice mindfulness by paying attention to the sights, sounds, and sensations around you. Take a few moments each day to appreciate the beauty in your surroundings, savor a delicious meal, or simply breathe deeply. This heightened awareness can lead to greater appreciation and a more positive outlook on life.
Here are a few ideas:
• Get a plant for your workspace
• Have a ‘clear the clutter’ day
• Take a different route on your journey to or from work
• Visit a new place for lunch
4. Keep Learning
Curiosity and lifelong learning contribute to a sense of achievement and fulfilment. Engaging in activities that challenge your mind, such as reading, taking up a new hobby, or attending workshops, can boost your self-esteem and keep your brain active. Embrace opportunities to learn and grow, both personally and professionally.
Here are a few ideas:
• Find out something about your colleagues
• Sign up for a class
• Read the news or a book
• Set up a book club
• Do a crossword or Sudoku
• Research something you’ve always wondered about
• Learn a new word
5. Give
Acts of kindness and generosity not only benefit others but also enhance our own wellbeing. Whether it's volunteering your time, offering a listening ear, or simply performing small acts of kindness, giving can create a sense of purpose and connection. The positive emotions associated with helping others can significantly improve our mental and emotional health.
You could try:
• Making a cup of tea for a colleague
• Offering to help a colleague with something they're stuck on
• Introducing yourself to a new-starter, to help them feel more at ease
• Seeing if there are any volunteering initiatives open at work
• Help a neighbour out with their bin or shopping
By incorporating these five principles into our lives, we can create a balanced and holistic approach to wellbeing. It's about making small, meaningful changes that lead to lasting improvements in our health and happiness. Remember, wellbeing is a journey, not a destination—so take it one step at a time and enjoy the process and see how embracing the themes of the Five Ways to Wellbeing can help you.
