National Pet Month: How Pets Support Our Mental Health

Plus, an introduction to our new dog walking group: Pawsitive Strides

April marks National Pet Month, a time to celebrate the incredible bond between people and their pets — and to raise awareness about the many benefits animals bring to our wellbeing.

Whether it’s the comfort of a cat curled up beside you, the loyal company of a dog, or simply having something to care for, pets offer more than just companionship — they can improve mood, reduce anxiety and bring a sense of purpose.

The Mental Health Benefits of Pets

Scientific research and personal experience alike show that spending time with animals can lead to real mental health improvements. Here are just a few examples:

• Lower stress and anxiety levels – petting animals has a calming effect and helps regulate emotions
• Improved mood – the presence of a pet can ease feelings of loneliness and lift spirits
• Daily structure – pets help create healthy routines and a sense of responsibility
• Greater social connection – pet owners often build new relationships through walks or pet-related communities
• More physical activity – particularly with dogs, regular walking improves both physical and emotional health

Introducing Pawsitive Strides: Our New Dog Walking Group

To coincide with National Pet Month, we’re excited to introduce Pawsitive Strides — our brand new dog walking group based in Darlington.
This free, informal group gives people the chance to enjoy the outdoors, walk alongside others, and share the mood-lifting company of dogs. Whether you have your own four-legged friend or just love spending time with them, Pawsitive Strides is open to all.

•  Welcoming adults aged 18+
•  Bring your own dog, or just come for the company
•  No pressure — just friendly, relaxed walks in nature
•  Supported by a Darlington Mind member of staff

Spending time in green spaces and connecting with others can greatly reduce feelings of isolation and stress. Pawsitive Strides brings all of that together in a gentle, supportive way. Visit our Pawsitive Strides page for all the latest information.

No Pet? No Problem — Here’s How You Can Still Get Involved

We know that not everyone is in a position to own a pet due to housing, allergies, financial reasons or lifestyle. The good news is you can still experience the benefits of animal companionship in other ways:

Borrow a Dog for Walks

Websites like BorrowMyDoggy connect people who love dogs with local dog owners who need help with walking or sitting. It’s a great way to enjoy time with a dog without full-time responsibility.

Volunteer at an Animal Charity

Many animal charities are always looking for volunteers. Try:

• Dogs Trust – nearest centre in Darlington
• Blue Cross – nearest centre in Thirsk
• RSPCA – nearest centre in Richmond

Even just a few hours a month can make a difference — both for the animals and for your own wellbeing.

This National Pet Month, let's celebrate companionship in all its forms.

Whether you have a pet, borrow one, or just enjoy being around animals, there are many ways to experience the positive mental health effects they bring. At Darlington Mind, we’re proud to recognise this powerful connection and to offer new ways for people in our community to benefit from it.
Join a walk. Meet new people. Take a few Pawsitive Strides towards better wellbeing.
